MIDDLETOWN -- AK Steel's locked-out union abandoned picketing at the plant's Wicoff Road gate entrance this week after a dispute with the Middletown Division of Fire, city and company officials said Wednesday.

Fire officials reported problems with union members at the gate along Roosevelt Boulevard -- about 25 feet from the front door of the department's headquarters -- since July, when nails began appearing in the tires of personal and emergency vehicles.
