Friday's high winds not only damaged 30 homes in Vandalia, but ripped down power lines, tore off roofs and uprooted trees throughout the Miami Valley, at one point leaving as many as 45,000 homes affected either by loss of power or flickering lights, Dayton Power and Light officials said.

Police and fire departments began responding to reports of downed wires and utility poles as early as 6 a.m., when winds began gusting up to 58 mph, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.
