IDA, Mich. -- Tim Berta has made the 60-foot, 6-inch throw from home plate to the pitcher's mound hundreds of times, but his parents say they'll be anxious when the former catcher attempts the toss to start Bluffton University's first home game of the season on March 18.

A year ago, the student coach was launched from the window of a motorcoach traveling at highway speeds as it crashed through a barrier on an overpass in Atlanta. Tim landed on the pavement unconscious, unrecognizable and near death. Before his parents, Robb and Karen Berta of Ida, Mich., learned of the accident, Tim had undergone surgeries to remove his spleen and to relieve swelling on his brain.
