There was a style of urban, pop music in the '70s and '80s that couldn't be classified as hip-hop but was a close cousin to R&B. Some of the many architects of this fusion of soul, R&B and pop include singers Frankie Beverly, NYC-based Keith Sweat and that reality-show rascal, Bobby Brown.
