TROY -- Historic downtowns and specialty shops are a match made in marketing heaven. That seems, at least, to be the perspective of both sides of the equation in downtown Troy, where owners of new businesses and promoters of downtown are enthused about an influx of new specialty shops.

"Downtowns are becoming a kind of niche area," said Chuck Fox, director of Troy Main Street, a nonprofit organization charged with promoting economic revitalization downtown. Towns and cities around the country are courting niche businesses, he said, because the match between them has proven successful.
