LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- One by one, the young trainers, the first- time trainers -- all of them beaten trainers -- made the pilgrimage to his out-of-the-way barn on the Churchill Downs backside Sunday morning.

Trainer Carl Nafzger -- whose colt Street Sense had outdueled 19 other horses to win Saturday's Kentucky Derby by 2 1 / 4 lengths -- was there sipping coffee and offering homespun observations when Steve Asmussen and Doug O'Neill came up and paid homage. Each had two horses finish behind Nafzger's dark bay entry.
