The recent grounding of the Air Force's fleet of F-15 fighters, after one of the planes broke up in flight over Missouri, was just a hint of the service's problems with what has been described as a "geriatric fleet."

The Air Force is flying KC-135 refueling tankers that average nearly 50 years old. A decision is expected soon on a new contract to begin replacing those. It has C-130 transport planes grounded because they are unreliable. The service is paying to have new wings installed on aging A-10 attack planes which were grounded because of wing cracks.
