Stivers Writing Students Creating Books As Art Forms

Summary


The book as an art form has been recognized in art circles for some time now. In Columbus, Chicago, New York and other large cities, there are centers for book and paper arts, and some art schools offer degrees in book arts. For the past four years, creative writing students at Stivers School for the Arts have been experimenting with books as an art form. "In creative writing, we have levels two, three and four," said Stivers creative writing teacher Eva Makstutis. "They're multi-aged, and many of them haven't had visual arts and don't think of themselves as artists, so I wanted to give them some kind of hands-on visual arts project. This is a class related to writing, and they create something that they can add their writings to later."

Makstutis introduced the book arts class four years ago, bringing in local artist Sandra Picciano as an adjunct to help.
