KETTERING -- A drive-in restaurant is OK, but the Kettering Planning Commission said they still need more time to think about a drive-through coffee shop. Last week, the four-member planning commission voted to approve the site and architectural plans for a Sonic Restaurant to be located at the Wilmington Pike Plaza at 2890 Wilmington Pike. This will be the first Sonic restaurant in Kettering, according to Tom Robillard, director of planning and development. The fast food company -- "America's Drive-in" -- is known for its carhops, who deliver food, sometimes on skates, such as burgers and malts to customers parked in their vehicles. The City Council will have the final say on whether the fast food restaurant will come into the community. Nearby Sonic Drive-Ins can be found at 7711 Hoke Road in Englewood and 1998 W. Main St. in Troy. The commission also discussed the possibility of a Starbucks coming to the Arbor Shopping Center, 4401 Far Hills Ave., but voted to continue the public hearings on a modification to the economic development overlay -- which is a custom zoning district for a particular site. The problem is, the coffee shop chain comes complete with a drive-through window. Robillard said current rules for the site say restaurants can't have drive-through windows.

The commissioners raised concerns about whether the modifications could open the door for fast food restaurants with drive-through windows or businesses that allow drive-through alcohol sales.
