Heading into the weekend, weather watchers had forecast a nasty winter storm would pelt the region with up to 8 inches of snow as well as sleet, ice and strong winds. The snow came. But the rains, the high winds and the fluctuating temperatures that accompanied the snow tamped it down or blew it away, making the accumulation seem lighter than expected in some places.

On Saturday, for example, about five inches of snow blanketed Brookville and more than four inches fell on Vandalia, said John Franks, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service's office in Wilmington.
