First-time skydivers at Skydive Greene County in Xenia don't go it alone. They're harnessed to an experienced diver who controls the entire experience from aerial takeoff to shoe-leather landing. These dives are generally slow and steady, paced and planned for maximum safety, and it isn't until a student has made several assisted jumps that he's allowed to go solo.

That's where the trouble begins, even though advances in parachutes have made the equipment more reliable than ever. As the equipment gets better, skydivers get more extreme, taking bigger chances with smaller chutes and faster, steeper turns, sometimes with disastrous results.
