Fewer veterinarians are working on farms -- a decline that could compromise animal welfare, food safety and food security, industry observers warn.

"A lot of young people really aren't exposed to animal agriculture the way they were 20 or 30 or 40 years ago," said Richard Meiring, a veterinarian and Ohio State University assistant professor. Since 2006, Meiring has worked to address the shortage.
