TROY -- While presidential campaigns repeatedly thrust Ohio into the national spotlight in the months before November's election, Julie Shaw found plenty of political fodder receiving little media attention half a world away.

Shaw, a 1985 graduate of Troy High School who worked for the Troy Daily News as a reporter and copy editor from 1989 to 1995, spent mid-August through early December, 2004, as an intern reporting and editing for a weekly newspaper in Uganda. She landed the experience through Ohio University's foreign correspondence intern program.
