Senate to Vote On Stem Cell Research

COLUMBUS -- A day after the issue appeared dead in the Ohio House, Senate President Bill Harris, R-Ashland, said the Senate next week would vote on legislation to restrict state funding for embryonic stem cell research and he would support it.

The debate over using state money for this research has become entangled in the campaign surrounding State Issue 1, a $2 billion "Jobs for Ohio" bond proposal on the Nov. 8 ballot. The issue includes $500 million for the Third Frontier Project, Gov. Bob Taft's initiative to link universities with business to promote research and create high-paying, high-tech jobs.
