Seder Meal Carries Passover Story to New Generations

Summary

Passover, the Jewish holiday celebrating freedom from slavery in Egypt, begins today at sundown. Central to the observance is the Seder, the ritual meal recounting the story of the Jews being enslaved, the 10 plagues that caused the pharaoh to relent and let them go, and the exodus from Egypt. Judy and Alan Chesen, along with son Jonah, enliven their Seders by inviting another family or two to join them. "I always invite someone who hasn't experienced a Seder before -- a student or family, so Jonah, 12, also has friends here," said Judy Chesen, a history professor at Miami University.

"My mom comes from Chicago, usually by bus, and I have Steven and Helen Markman and their extended family. Helen's mother comes from Cleveland and an aunt and uncle come from Lexington. It's usually at least 25 people," Judy Chesen said, adding, "This year my brother and his family may come from New York."
