WASHINGTON - Calling the invasion of Iraq "a war of necessity," President Bush said Sunday "we had no choice" but to confront the threat that Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein might put weapons of mass destruction in the hands of terrorists. Bush, in an interview broadcast on the NBC television network's Meet the Press program, also defended himself against charges that he was absent without leave from National Guard service three decades ago in Alabama.

"I did my duty," Bush said, adding that he would "absolutely" authorize the release of any military records that might help put the matter to rest.
