Coming off a summer that featured a lengthy drought and seemingly endless 100-degree days, some homeowners are going into autumn with a lawn that resembles a natural disaster.

"Right now, we are busier than we've ever been," said Rodney Creech, owner of Lawn Plus, a lawn health business based in West Alexandria. "It was the extreme heat, the length of the heat, the drought. Heat or drought alone usually don't hurt you too badly. But when you have both, it destroys the turf much more quickly. In a neighborhood of 40 houses, we're seeing 30 that could use seeding." In addition to seeking professional assistance, there are a number of things homeowners should do to resurrect their yards beyond running the sprinkler now and again -- things like education and simple diligence. "A lot of times, people will use the wrong products or the right products at the wrong times," he said.
