SAN FRANCISCO -- There was much moon-howling in July 2003 when the Cincinnati Reds took a machete to the roster and seemed to trade everybody making more than a buck-and-a-half.

General Manager Jim Bowden was fired, and special assistant Brad Kullman was told to put up a lemonade stand and get rid of players, most of whom were not lemons.
