NO ONE HAD A KEENER INTEREST THIS WEEK in hearing Gov. Bob Taft's plans to help unemployed Ohioans than those whose state unemployment benefits ran out in January. As they were continuing to look for work in a national economy that grew by just 1,000 jobs in December, their safety net was pulled out from under them. They're on their own now and will have to make do on their savings and help from family and friends - until they find or job or can prove they are living in poverty.
As the governor was delivering his State of the State address, the numbers of such people nationally was setting records. Not since the U.S. Department of Labor started keeping track of such information in 1973 have so many unemployed Americans exhausted unemployment benefits in one month without qualifying for additional, temporary federal aid.See the full content of this document
