Government: Recession Helps Hold Line On Energy Costs

Gasoline prices aren't likely to increase much from current levels during 2009 and 2010 because of the recession and a slowing of consumption, the U.S. Department of Energy said in an energy prices forecast released Tuesday, Jan. 13.

Prices of regular-grade gasoline averaged $1.68 per gallon nationally on Jan. 5, down sharply from their 2007 peak of $4.11 on July 14, the Energy Department's Energy Information Administration reported. Those prices are expected to average $1.87 per gallon in 2009 and $2.18 in 2010, the government predicted.
