Prison System to Get 2 Percent Increases

Summary

The state prison system gets 2 percent increases in fiscal 2008 and 2009 under Gov. Ted Strickland's budget, but the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction will take measures to control costs, including placing low-level felons in community programs instead of expensive prison beds.

Corrections, one of Ohio's largest departments, would get $1.54 billion in fiscal 2008 and $1.59 billion in fiscal 2009 to run 32 institutions, the parole system and community corrections programs. The budget fully funds negotiated pay increases and anticipates no layoffs or prison closures.
