Summary
The country got a preview of george w. Bush's campaign last night. The president was confident of his decisions, certain but not soaring in laying out his agenda. Coming on the heels of the Iowa caucuses, his speech was designed to put him above the Democratic fray. A year ago in his State of the Union speech, President Bush told Americans why they might have to go to war against Saddam Hussein. Last night he told them why it was the right decision. In emphasizing moral imperatives and what we've done for Iraq and its neighbors by deposing Saddam, he skipped over the question of whether war was the only way.
In committing us to ensuring that Iraq gets to try its hand at democracy, the president has vastly expanded this country's reach and responsibilities in the Middle East. While Mr. Bush emphasized the positive effects of that victorious show of force - that Libya, for example, now is getting rid of chemical, biological and nuclear weapon programs - our credibility and intentions also are increasingly suspect in the Arab world.
