PNC Financial Services Group Inc. has grown rapidly in recent years with big acquisitions in East Coast markets. Buying National City Corp. will make PNC a prominent player in the Midwest, as well.

Buying Riggs National Bank in Washington, D.C., in 2004 and Mercantile National Bank in Baltimore in 2006 has sharpened PNC's ability to integrate operations of the banks it purchases, said Brian Goerke, a PNC spokesman at its Pittsburgh headquarters.
