While visiting an old girlfriend in California in 2003, J. Edgar Bennett of Dayton had his passport, driver's license and American Express checks stolen from his friend's home.

Bennett, now 36, replaced the items and didn't think much about the theft until five or six months later, when he began looking for a job in Nashville, Tenn.
