Summary
I owe Joe Paterno an apology. Despite being a fan of Penn State University's football team, I was secretly hoping the Nittany Lions would have a rather so-so season. I wanted to see Penn State post a record a few games better than Bobby Bowden at Florida State, which would keep Paterno -- 81, in his 43rd season as Penn State's head coach -- ahead of Bowden in career wins. Then they would both retire. I think the Nittany Lions would benefit from a younger coach -- Rutgers' Greg Schiano, possibly? -- who can better relate to the players and bring in some new ideas. But Paterno's spread offense has the Nittany Lions at 5-0. Impressive wins include a 45-14 thumping of Oregon State (which roughed up USC) and a 38-24 Big Ten triumph against Illinois.
For that start, the Lions leaped from 12th to sixth in both the Associated Press and USA Today polls. Now I'm hoping Penn State wins it all, something I didn't think possible with the loaded team Ohio State returned.See the full content of this document
