Opening-Day Deer Take Is Down in '04

Ohio's Division of Wildlife folks are trying to put a positive spin on it, but for some reason the number of whitetail deer killed by hunters on Monday -- opening day of the deer gun season -- dropped from last year. And last year was down from the year before.

It might not mean much that a couple thousand fewer deer were taken on one day in 2004 than in 2003 (40,254 vs. 43,052), except that all predictions pointed to bigtime records being set this year.
