THE GOOD THING ABOUT MARK HURD'S TENure as president and chief executive of NCR is that he brought the company out of the doldrums. The bad thing is his accomplishments were recognized by more than just NCR shareholders.

Mr. Hurd's departure to struggling Hewlett-Packard Co. is a loss not just for NCR, but also for Dayton. Having spent 25 years with the company -- arriving soon after graduation from college -- he understood the community and the company. Many in Dayton have slept better knowing that, as NCR considered and made cost-cutting decisions, the guy at the top had grown up professionally here. And so long as good things were happening for the company, there was always the potential for good things happening at its world headquarters on Dayton's South Patterson Boulevard.
