It's easy to blame one food or another for causing weight gain, but when it comes to losing pounds, it's the total number of calories consumed that matter in the end. We often turn healthy low- calorie foods into high-calorie foods by the way we prepare them. Done often enough, this can very easily add up to unwanted pounds and inches over time.

For example, the potato is the second most consumed food in the United States, trailing only milk products. Despite being a low fat, low-calorie, low-sodium food, it has gotten a reputation for causing weight gain. The truth is, a potato is approximately 75 percent water. As for calories, a medium-sized plain, baked or boiled potato has only about 110 calories. However, take this same potato and add just one tablespoon of butter and you have doubled the number of calories. Add sour cream, bacon, butter, cheese or other toppings and you're looking at a many times that amount.
