Summary


One frustrating thing about writing about political disputes for a living is that too few controversies get resolved once and for all. Think of, say, term limits, tax cuts, tax increases, affirmative action, spending cuts, spending increases. These fights just go on and on. Oh, sure, a few stray minds change here and there. But mostly people just keep taking the same position endlessly, until the subject fades away. And they keep finding justification.

A few debates do get resolved: the civil rights debates of the 1960s; the Vietnam war, pretty much. The case that concealed handguns would result in an outbreak of supermarket and commuter violence is dead. Communism doesn't work. Those are resolved.
