WASHINGTON -- While the race for U.S. Senate has been portrayed primarily as a face-off between a possibly vulnerable Republican incumbent and a longtime Democratic congressman from near Cleveland, both prospective front-runners face challengers in the May 2 primary election.

U.S. Sen. Mike DeWine, a Cedarville Republican seeking his third Senate term, faces two challengers: William Pierce of Maineville, a former businessman and schoolteacher, and David R. Smith, a financial manager from Mason.
