The HIV infection rate among inner-city heterosexuals is at epidemic levels, and is more than 20 times greater than the infection rate for all U.S. heterosexuals, according to a major government study released Monday, July 19.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study underscores that poverty -- not race -- is the single most important demographic factor associated with HIV infections among heterosexuals.
