DAYTON -- She was caught forever in a famous photograph of an ugly time in the nation's history, when white students assailed nine black students trying to integrate Central High School in Little Rock, Ark., in 1957.

Wearing a crisp new dress and a pair of sunglasses, Elizabeth Eckford walked to school braving a screaming mob. She tried to enter the school with a crowd of tormenting white students on her heels.
