Increased competition by area colleges and universities to attract minorities means historically black colleges and universities -- HBCUs -- such as Central State and Wilberforce must stand out to win over students who once saw those institutions as their only options for higher education.

"I don't think anyone in the HBCU world thinks they can survive by appealing solely to African American students," said Eric Fingerhut, chancellor of the Ohio Board of Regents.
