Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates has recommended new civilian and military leadership for the Air Force, just days after taking the unprecedented step of forcing out both of their predecessors simultaneously.

Gates on Monday, June 9, recommended that President Bush nominate Gates' top staff assistant, Michael B. Donley, as the next secretary of the Air Force, a civilian post. Gates recommended that the president nominate Gen. Norton A. Schwartz, commander of the U.S. Transportation Command at Scott Air Force Base, Ill., as the next Air Force chief of staff.
