Wright-Patterson Bids Farewell to Pioneering Stealth Fighter

WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE -- Base personnel said their goodbyes on Tuesday, March 11, to the F-117A Nighthawk, the nation's first operational stealth fighter airplane, which the Air Force is retiring to storage in the Nevada desert.

The Air Force is retiring the $45 million planes to save the expense of its day-to-day maintenance for buying new warplanes that have advanced stealth capacity and firepower, said Gen. Bruce Carlson, commander of the Air Force Materiel Command located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The 650th Aeronautical Systems Squadron, part of the Aeronautical Systems Center at Wright- Patterson, manages the F-117A program.
