The two Fairmont High School seniors were recently named National Merit Scholarship finalists. They are the first Firebirds to make the elite ranks since 2004 and it puts them in the running for significant scholarships and, perhaps, full rides at several universities.

"It was a huge relief to make the cut because I had been offered several scholarships based on making it as a finalist," Horney said. "It's nice to be recognized for my academic achievements, but even nicer that I can get scholarships as a result."
