A mistake in gas distribution in Lebanon had many residents smelling something foul.

Lebanon firefighters received more than 500 calls from residents who reported smelling natural gas leaks on Aug. 6. Both the Lebanon Fire Department and representatives from Duke Energy confirmed that the problem was caused by an overload of mercaptan -- an odorizer inserted into natural gas, which is typically odorless -- to be used as a warning signal when a gas leak occurs.
