DAYTON -- Max Gutmann, the former chairman and chief executive of Elder-Beerman Stores Corp. who led the retailer during a period of growth and returned later to help guide it out of bankruptcy, died Thursday morning, March 26, in Savannah, Ga. He was 86.

A financial contribution from Mr. Gutmann enabled the University of Dayton to establish a lecture series to promote Catholic-Jewish dialogue. He was a founder of the Downtown Dayton Partnership and Dayton Development Council, was a chairman of the Ohio Council of Retail Merchants and served on numerous corporate and community boards in Dayton.
