Breaking through the quiet afternoons in Wilberforce this month have been blares of whistles and popping of pads -- and those at Central State University couldn't be happier.

The Marauders, who dropped football after the 1996 season as part of a deal with the state legislature to keep the school open, return the sport this fall funded entirely with private money and playing an abbreviated six-game schedule. An NCAA Division II provisional school, Central State will play as an independent.
