Dunbar, Ohio State Product Cook Scores 17 in Nba Debut ; After Being Left On the Bench in the Heat's Opener, Rookie Guard Makes Case for Staying in Rotation.

Summary

INDIANAPOLIS -- Daequan Cook jumped high and straight, firing a 28-foot shot from the left wing. Just like at Dunbar High School and Ohio State, he wanted the ball in a tight game. On Friday night, the setting was Conseco Fieldhouse -- Cook's first NBA regular-season action. The 6-foot-5 rookie guard didn't play in Miami's Thursday home loss to Detroit. Cook's shot from well beyond the arc swished and momentarily put Miami ahead by seven points. "That's confidence coming into a game after sitting out (Thursday) and knocking down open shots," Cook said. "And showing Coach (Pat Riley) the stroke that he fell in love with at the beginning."

Cook played 29 minutes and scored a teamhigh 17 points in Miami's 87-85 loss.
