Garbage disposers are simple, tough and convenient, and they will typically last 10 years or more before they need replacement. If a disposer stops on you, it's usually fairly easy to get it going again.
The most common failure for a garbage disposer (or garbage disposal, as they are often called) is a jammed flywheel. Somewhere in the guts of the disposer is a horizontal metal plate called the flywheel.
