CENTERVILLE -- The Centerville school board said in its statement to the public Feb. 9 regarding the failed November 5.9-mill continuing levy that will be back on the May 5 ballot, that "failing to pass a levy now can mean turning back the clock to the tumultuous days of the early 1990s when the Centerville City Schools laid off many teachers and cut back or eliminated many programs, and will inevitably cost taxpayers far more than any levy."

Centerville School Superintendent Gary Smiga said he understands that residents said no to new revenue for 2009, but he hopes they realize the district can expect no new money from the state this year, according to the governor's present proposal, and the board has shown responsibility by making reductions and tightening its belt.
