Local officials said President Barack Obama's 2012 budget proposal could result in a loss of millions of dollars to this region for energy-assistance and home-assistance programs for the poor and working class.

The proposal unveiled Monday calls for reducing the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program by $2.5 billion in 2012 -- or virtually cutting the existing $5.1 billion program in half -- and the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program by $300 million, from $3.98 billion to $3.68 billion.
