Sixty years ago this month, Ohio's famed 37th "Buckeye" Infantry Division stormed ashore in a four-division assault on Luzon -- destination: Manila, the Philippines capital and major city 120 miles away.
We Buckeyes spearheaded the drive to Manila, playing a major role in freeing more than 3,000 POWs from a detention camp and a prison. The ensuing fourweek battle for the city cost the 37th more than 3,000 casualties, during which the 17,000 Japanese occupiers slaughtered more than 100,000 Filipino men, women and children before they themselves were killed.
