Hospitals and other medical facilities will take an important step toward accountability today, General Motors' regional health care director said of the new www.anthem.com price-comparison database for 38 common services.

"It's about time," said GM's Dayton-based Sam Shalaby, who helped Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield develop the program for its roughly 300,000 Miami Valley enrollees. "One-sixth of the U.S. economy is related to health care, and decisions are made without any quality and price information. We don't buy anything else that way."
