BROOKVILLE -- A possible increase in the income tax for this community took a step closer to reality as City Council members approved the first reading of two pieces of proposed legislation aimed placing the issue before voters in November.

The increase would help pay for a new fire station for the Brookville Fire Department, and would be on the books for a period of 25 years. Ordinance 2010-07 would amend Brookville's charter to allow for the increase of one-quarter of a percent in the income tax from 1.75 percent to two percent.
