DAYTON -- The most important thing to know about Bernstein's "Mass" in advance of the Dayton Philharmonic's performances is that it isn't just an orchestral score. It's a full theatrical production.

It was commissioned by Jacqueline Kennedy for the opening of the national arts center named for her late husband -- the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts -- and was controversial from the start.
