Summary


Though General Motors Corp. says it will lay off 340 at its Moraine SUV plant next year, the company and other automotive- related enterprises remain major drivers for the local economy.

The proposed layoffs -- slated to occur between January and June 2008 -- would cut the Moraine SUV assembly plant's roster of hourly workers to about 1,910, versus the current 2,250. The plant also employs 200 salaried workers.
