FAIRBORN -- Three weeks ago, Harold Gayheart attempted to persuade his 89-year-old aunt, who was blind in one eye and had 3 percent vision in the other, to move into a senior citizen's home because he feared for the woman's life.

He was afraid that she'd either start a grease fire while cooking or fall. But Vernice Short, who Gayheart and neighbors described as strongwilled and independent, declined.
