GERMANTOWN -- When the board of directors of the National Audubon Society held a recent meeting at the Aullwood Audubon Center and Farm, there was little doubt that time for birding would be built into their schedule.

One of their trips took them to the Germantown MetroPark, which was designated an Important Bird Area in 2000, the only such area in Montgomery County. A formal dedication of the IBA designation was made last year.
